GRUSSWORT
und PUR (Public Understanding of Research) weiterzuentwickeln.

Römisch-Germanischen Zentralmuseum in Mainz wahr.
Welt. Das Bergland der Krim im Frühmittelalter« sowie »Reiterkrieger, Burgenbauer. Die frühen Ungarn
und das Deutsche Reich vom 9. bis zum 11. Jahrhundert«, in denen in bewährter Weise Fachkolleginnen

In diesem Sinne: Ad multos annos!

VUJADIN IVANIŠEVIĆ
METAL WORKSHOPS OF CARIČIN GRAD (JUSTINIANA PRIMA)
Caričin Grad (okr. Jablanica / SRB) was built as a new city in the second quarter of the 6th century in the
central area of Northern Illyricum. It was an imperial endowment of Justinian I intended to serve as the seat
of the praetorian prefect of Illyricum and the see of the archbishop. According to Justinian’s Novella 131, no
prefecture was established in the city. However, judging by numerous public buildings, there certainly was
an administrative apparatus, most likely headed by the archbishop. The military also played an important
role 1.
The new metropolis attracted numerous craftsmen, who, in the city and its vicinity, produced goods
for a market that spread through the Leskovac valley and further on towards Naissus (modern Niš, okr.
Nišava / SRB), Remesiana (modern Bela Palanka, okr. Pirot / SRB) and Justiniana Secunda (modern Gračanica,
dist. Priština / RKS). There is evidence of metal, wood, stone, textile, leather, bone and glass working activities and pottery production. A special place was held by metal products, which accounted for a substantial
share of products of local craftsmen. Already the irst researcher of the city, Vladimir Petković, observed old
furnaces for smelting ore below the city, along the Svinjarička river 2. Numerous mines in the vicinity of the
city, particularly those in the mining district Lece (okr. Jablanica / SRB), exploited in Roman times, may have
provided the required raw material 3.
Found in the city during investigations were parts of furnaces and numerous remains of slag. Unfortunately,
no furnace has so far been linked with metalworking activities in the urban core of the city. On the other
hand, inds of moulds during early excavations conirmed the existence of the production of utilitarian
products, particularly belt parts, such as ittings and strap-ends. Three steatite moulds have been unearthed:
one in the area of the South Street in the Upper City 4, one in the portico outside the double basilica 5, and
one between the basilica with transept and the East Street in the Lower City (ig. 1, 1-3). According to the
excavation register, several stone shards from moulds that had not survived were found next to the third
mould 6. Distinguished among the three inds is the second one, used in the production of ittings and
strap-ends. Simple shield-shaped ittings of an unornamented surface and a mid-section with openwork
decoration were cast in the mould. In addition to ittings, strap-ends with elongated trapezoidal bases and
embellished surfaces were also produced. The irst strap-end, in the centre of the mould, is decorated with
a series of lines and globules. The central motif, which has only partly survived, has a cruciform base with a
circle inscribed in it. The globules are arranged along the shaft of the cross and below it. The other strap-end
is decorated with a simple central interlace, whereas its edges are embellished with thin incisions (ig. 2, 2).
Distant analogies of the ittings are those in the mould for belt sets from Caesarea in Cappadocia (modern
Kayseri, İl Kayseri / TR), dated to a broad period ranging between the end of the 5th century and the second
third of the 6th century 7. The other two moulds were used to cast shanks, i. e. handles, and round plates

WORKSHOP IN THE POSTERN OF THE
SOUTHERN RAMPART OF THE UPPER CITY
Remains of a workshop were discovered in 1979 in
the postern of the southern rampart of the Upper
City, whose exit faced the small thermae and the
Lower City (ig. 1, 4). On this occasion, three large,
fragmented belt set moulds were found. The moulds
were used to produce buckles, ittings, strap-ends,
tongues and bars 8 (ig. 3, 1. 3-4). Cast in the
moulds were oval buckles with a ribbed surface and
slightly recessed front part where the tongue rests.
Tongues and bars were produced separately and
subsequently attached to buckles. Shield-shaped ittings with edges decorated with tiny pseudo-granules were also cast in the moulds. The upper part
of the ittings is decorated with an openwork trefoil
ornament. Produced in addition to these were strapends whose upper part is in the form of a shieldshaped itting decorated with pseudo-granules,
their bottom part has an elongated oval body, while
the central part is almond-shaped and features an
openwork decoration. The ittings and strap-ends

of the ittings is reminiscent of similar objects from
the large hoard found at Akalan (dist. Istanbul / TR),
dated to 626, the time of the great siege of Constantinople 9. According to Éva Garam, they belong to a
large group of belt ittings featuring leaf-shaped motifs 10. Analogies of the buckle are found in a broad area
stretching from Asia Minor to Illyricum and to Barbaricum 11.
The moulds were used several times, a fact indicated by new channels incised over earlier patterns. They
were discovered in a ire layer, which provided a date for the remains of the workshop of around the year
600 12.
WORKSHOPS IN THE LOWER CITY SETTLEMENT
More workshops, or, more precisely, their remains, were discovered in the course of investigation of a settlement in the southwestern part of the Lower City. In this area, delimited by ramparts on its western and
southern sides and by the South Street of the Lower City on the eastern side, a settlement with two rows
of buildings was investigated. The irst row comprises four buildings, erected next to the western portico

of the South Street, whereas the other row comprises four smaller buildings erected in the area between
the irst row and the western rampart 13. Virtually all the items, i. e. moulds for the production of utilitarian
objects, casts, lead models, matrices, casting pots and tools, were discovered in this latter row of buildings
in the northern and, particularly, southern parts of the settlement (igs 1, 5-6; 4, 1-2). These inds have
greatly supplemented our knowledge of craftsmanship production at Caričin Grad, as well as in Byzantine
cities in general. Even though they are few in number, they are indicative of a well-developed manufacture
of various objects, from military equipment to articles for personal use.
Stone moulds
These are fragmentary remains of steatite moulds. One fragmented mould was found in Sector AF, inside a
building adjacent to the southern rampart of the Lower City, and the other two in Sector O, in the northern
courtyard of a two-part building (igs 1, 5; 4, 1).
As already stated, the irst mould has survived only in part and contains patterns for casting oval buckles
with ribbed surfaces, and tongues (inv. 1998/85) (ig. 5, 1). The other fragmented mould, from Sector O,
was used to cast buckles (inv. 2000/311) (ig. 5, 2) of a type similar to the previous one and the ones found
in the postern of the southern rampart of the Upper City. The third mould in this group was used for the production of crosses with trapezoidal arms and decorated along the edges with tiny weights (inv. 2000/120)

Maurice, one of them minted in 591/592 and the other in 599/600.
Ceramic moulds
Belonging to a totally different group are two ceramic moulds for casting ibulae with bent stems. Both of
these items, as well as a cast of a ibula, were discovered in Sector X, in the eastern part of the courtyard
between the buildings in Sectors AD and AJ and Sector V (igs 1, 6; 4, 2).

One of the moulds has survived almost in its entirety; only part of the mould and the spring of the ibula are
missing (inv. 1997/16) (ig. 6, 1). The other mould is substantially damaged and only the part containing the
pattern for the bow and the head of the ibula has survived (inv. 1997/77) (ig. 6, 2). It should be pointed
out that the two items do not belong to the same set of moulds. The irst mould was found in a layer containing two half-folles of Justin II, one of which was minted in 574/575 and the other in 575/576. The other
mould is from a layer containing a half-follis of Justin II and a decanummium dated to a broad time period
between Tiberius II and Phocas. The ind of the cast of a ibula with bent stem comes from the same layer.
Casts
In the course of the investigation of the settlement, two casts were discovered: a ibula with bent stem and
a buckle itting. The cast of a ibula with bent stem represents a valuable ind indicative of the entire process
of production of these ibulae in the settlement in the Lower City. It should be stressed that the ibula was
not cast in either of the moulds described above, but in a third one. Clearly evident on the ibula are casting traces that were not removed. Likewise, the head has no perforation for the hinge assembly. The ibula
belongs to a group of small-sized ibulae with a lat and short bow, oval in section, and an elongated foot.
Neither the bow nor the foot are decorated; the ornament in the form of a pseudo-spiral would have been
incised later (inv. 1997/34) (igs 6, 3; 10, 4). Clearly indicated on the cast item, as well as on the moulds, is
the bottom part of the bow that contained decoration. It should be stressed that all the items of this type
of small ibula discovered at Caričin Grad are decorated with incisions imitating spirals. The cast of a ibula
was found in the same layer as the second ibula mould described above. Analogies of this type of ibula are
numerous. They are predominantly found along the Lower and Middle Danube all the way to Singidunum
(modern Belgrade / SRB), as well as in the interior of Illyricum and in Barbaricum 14.
An important ind of a cast is that of a rare type of buckle, unearthed in the same courtyard as the previous
ind (ig. 1, 6). It is an uninished buckle itting. The body of the itting is elongated and reinforced in the
central part with a rectangular lare which then tapers and ends in laterally attached ends and a knoblike
lare (inv. 1998/6) (ig. 6, 4). Two half-folles of Justin II, minted in 567/568 and 569/570, respectively, were
found in the same layer as the buckle. That this was a cast is further indicated by casting traces in its central

part as well as the unworked upper surface. A narrow channel that can be discerned as running lengthwise over the top and bottom parts of the itting was
to be removed in order that a buckle might be attached at the end. A construction and stylistic parallel to our item is found in a buckle that is assumed to
have come from the territory of present-day Serbia.
The latter buckle is constructed in the same manner,
except that the top lare is a little more prominent,
whereas the buckle itself is decorated and nielloed.
It is made of silver 15. A more stylized type of buckle
itting is found at Salona (modern Solin, žup. Splitsko-dalmatinska / HR), which Zdenko Vinski classiied
as the Salona-Histria type 16. Similar with respect to
the technology used in the production of our type
of buckle is a buckle from Lebanon, i. e. from Byblos
(dist. Jbeil / RL) or Tyros (modern Tyre, dist. Tyre / RL).
This buckle with inely designed ittings belongs to a
more developed form of this type 17.
Lead models
A separate group of items comprises two lead models found in the area along the western rampart; one
was found in the courtyard north of the building in Sectors AD and AJ, and the other in the western room
that was a later addition to the said structure (igs 1, 6; 4, 2).
The irst item represents a rather special ind. It is a lead model of Kētos devouring a serpent. That the igure is that of Kētos is indicated by a canine-like protome, wings and ishlike tail. The body of the monster
is decorated with incised lines representing fur and feathers. The body of Kētos ends in a triangular tail

(inv. 2000/157) (ig. 7, 1). The model was found in a layer containing a decanummium minted by Tiberius II
in 579/580. Analogies of this representation of Kētos in this period are unknown.
The other item is a model of a lead itting. The itting consists of a top part shaped as a ring to which a prominent body with upturned ends is attached. The itting features a triangular trefoil ending (inv. 2001/377)
(ig. 7, 2). It was discovered in a layer containing a half-follis of Justin II minted in 566/567. Remote analogies of this item are found in the cemeteries of Kiskőrös-Vágóhid (Kom. Bács-Kiskun / H), grave 9, and Tatabánya-Alsógalla (Kom. Komárom-Esztergom / H), grave 139. Found together with these items were strapends characteristic of the Martinovka type 18. A similar itting was found in Arcisa (reg. Emilia Romagna / I),
grave 2 19.
Bronze matrices
Still another separate group of items comprises three bronze matrices; two of them were used for impressing strap-ends and one to decorate ittings. Like the casts and lead models, these items were discovered
in the courtyard north of the building in Sectors AD and AJ, with the exception of the irst matrix that was
found in the inner courtyard of the said structure (igs 1, 6; 4, 2).
The base of the irst matrix is a rectangular plate with rounded sides, bearing the positive of a strap-end. The
strap-end is elongated, with a slightly curved middle part and a slightly lared upper part whose straightlined end is decorated with three parallel incisions. The lower part of the strap-end is shield-shaped. The
middle part of the strap-end features a simple, longitudinally running vegetal ornament (inv. 2001/289)
(igs 8, 1; 10, 1). Direct analogies of this type of strap-end are found at Sadovec (obl. Pleven / BG) and in
Arcisa, grave 5 20. Max Martin attributed them to the Sadovec-Arcisa type 21.

The second matrix is of smaller dimensions and was worked into a broad rectangular plate. The middle part
features a matrix of a rectangular base with rounded ends. Its upper surface is covered with vegetal motifs
and dot and comma decoration (inv. 2001/213) (igs 8, 2; 10, 2). This item was found in a layer containing
half-folles of emperor Maurice minted in 587/588 and 601/602, respectively.
The third matrix is of the same model as the previous two. An irregularly shaped rectangular plate features a rosette with eight petals. The central motif consists of four oval petals forming a cross surrounded
by pseudo-granules. The joins of the petals are illed with smaller petals shaped like drops (inv. 1997/12)
(igs 8, 3; 10, 3). The matrix with a rosette was found in a layer containing a half-follis of emperor Maurice
minted in 596/597.
Ceramic casting pots
In the course of excavations in the settlement inside the Lower City, several fragments of casting pots were
unearthed. The largest number of them were found in the areas where the largest number of objects related
to metal workshops had been discovered, that is, within the courtyard north of the building in Sectors AD
and AJ (igs 1, 6; 4, 2) and in Sector O, in the northern courtyard of the two-room building (igs 1, 5; 4, 1).
One fragment comes from Sector D.
These are simple ceramic pots, conical in shape, with slightly downturned brims and thick walls. They were
used for casting metal, which is attested by the remains of metal inside them and by the cracks in their walls
(ig. 9, 3). It should be noted that a casting pot was found in the same layer as one of the ceramic moulds
for ibulae and the cast of a ibula.
Goldsmithing tools
Various tools were discovered in the settlement. Outstanding among them are items that can typically be
linked with metalworking activities. They are a small goldsmithing hammer, found in the western portico of
the South Street of the Upper City, and a tinner’s snip, discovered in the southwestern tower of the Lower
City. The tower is close to the building in Sectors AD and AJ, where the lead ittings model and the irst
strap-end matrix were found (ig. 1, 6).
The iron hammer has a rectangular base with slightly downturned ends, one of which ends in a lat,
nubbed cutting edge and the other in a sharp blade. The rectangular socket for the handle is reinforced
(inv. 1998/19) (ig. 9, 1). Such hammers were found in numerous graves of metalsmiths and goldsmiths,
e. g. at Kölked-Feketekapu B (Kom. Baranya / H), grave 80 22, Kunszentmárton-Habranyi-telep (Kom. JászNagykun-Szolnok / H), grave 1 23, and at Brno-Kotlářská (CZ) 24.
The tinner’s snip is a rare ind. One half of the snip has survived; it has a long handle that is rectangular in
section and lares at the top, where the other blade would have been attached; the blade is short and triangular. The other end of the handle features a round concave lare (inv. 1989/31) (ig. 9, 2).

WORKSHOPS AND PRODUCTS
The inds of moulds for the production of utilitarian
objects, casts, lead models, matrices, casting pots
and tools in the settlement in the southwestern part
of the Lower City are indicative of a well-developed
production of various items and the existence of a
number of workshops in this area, which, as indicated by numerous numismatic inds, were active in
the period between the reigns of Justin II and Maurice (565-602). The workshops were concentrated in
the buildings erected next to the western rampart in
the northern part, next to the structure in Sector O
(igs 1, 5; 4, 1) and in the southern part, next to
the building in Sectors AD and AJ, where the largest number of items were found (igs 1, 6; 4, 2). It
should be stressed that there were also workshops
in other parts of the city, a fact indicated by the inds
in the postern of the southern rampart of the Upper
City, as well as by sporadic, isolated inds in other
parts of the city.
The irst workshop must have been the one that produced ibulae, since its remains were found in the Fig. 9 Workshop in the Lower City: 1 hammer. – 2 tinner snips. –

AJ, next to the large structure in Sectors X and Y, in
the layers containing coins minted by Justin II and a
coin dated to a broad time period between Tiberius II
and Phocas (igs 1, 5; 4, 1). The inds of the two pairs
of moulds, one cast and uninished ibula with bent stem, and a casting pot are indicative of a production
chain whose inal products were the inished ibulae of this type found in large numbers at Caričin Grad 25
(igs 6, 1-3; 10, 4). The opinion of Florin Curta and Andrei Gândilă concerning an analysis of the casts of
this type of ibula from Drobeta (modern Drobeta-Turnu Severin, jud. Mehedinţi / RO) that the castings may
have been produced in another place, i. e. in workshops along the Lower Danube, should be dismissed 26.
Fibulae with bent stems were also being produced in large urban centres and in the interior and western
parts of Illyricum, as demonstrated by our workshop, as well as a lead model of this type of ibula from
Singidunum 27.
It is much harder to determine the purpose of the second workshop, situated in the northern part of the
settlement, next to the building in Sector O (igs 1, 5; 4, 1), as only broken pieces of steatite moulds have
been found in it (ig. 5, 2-3). The existence of a workshop in the northern part is indicated by the inds of
casting pots in Sector D. This workshop, similar in character to the one discovered in the postern of the
southern rampart of the Upper City, produced buckles and probably other parts of belt sets and also crosses.

It can be reliably dated to the reign of emperor Maurice, whose coins were found together with mould fragments. The same date has been suggested for the said workshop in the postern of the southern rampart
of the Upper City 28.
The best preserved are the remains of the third workshop, situated next to the building in Sectors AD and
AJ (igs 1, 6; 4, 2). Most of the inds come from the northern courtyard that stretches towards the building,
whilst some of the inds were discovered in the structure itself and in the tower, which was an integral part
of a probable workshop complex.
The inds of diverse items within this complex, such as a cast of a buckle itting (ig. 6, 4), lead models
(ig. 7, 1-2), matrices (ig. 8, 1-3), fragments of casting pots (ig. 9, 1) and a tinner’s snip (ig. 9, 2), are
indicative of a complex and diversiied production of utilitarian objects, mostly parts of military dress and,
presumably, of horse harnesses. Based on numismatic inds, the workshop can be dated to the reign of
emperor Maurice.
According to M. Schulze-Dörrlamm, the cast of a buckle itting belongs to a rare type with an oval buckle,
a prominent tongue and ittings with openwork decoration (ig. 6, 4). Items of this type are known from
Jerusalem, Asia Minor, Braţei (jud. Sibiu / RO) and Salona. The same author dates these buckles to the irst
half of the 7th century 29. Our ind, however, moves the date back to a slightly earlier time and identiies
Caričin Grad as the place where one variant of this buckle was being produced.
The lead model of a itting (ig. 7, 2) belongs to a group of objects that were an integral part of belt sets,
combined with Martinovka type strap-ends, as indicated by the inds from the cemeteries at KiskőrösVágóhid, grave 9, and Tatabánya-Alsógalla, grave 139 30.
The two matrices for impressing the Martinovka type strap-ends come from the same workshop (igs 8,
1-2; 10, 1-2). These were early variants of strap-ends that became an integral part of dress in the 7th and
8th centuries 31. Our inds belong to the early varieties, which were small and decorated with stylized vegetal ornaments. The items closest to them are those found at Sadovec and Arcisa 32. The prototypes could
be the small narrow strap-ends, mostly without decorations, known from Caričin Grad and Syria 33. More
developed forms are found in Lombard cemeteries, as indicated by the inds from Nocera Umbria (prov.
Perugia / I), graves 79 and 85 34.
The lead model of Kētos and the matrix for rosettes could be linked to the objects used for the production
of horse harnesses. It is dificult to interpret the lead model of Kētos because, as we have already pointed
out, there are no known analogies (ig. 7, 1). The character of the item and the depiction is reminiscent of
similar lead models found at Crypta Balbi (Rome / I), where lead models for producing saddle ittings were
discovered 35. On the other hand, depictions of Kētos are found on gold saddle ittings from the Lombard
cemetery at Castel Trosino (reg. Marche / I), grave 119. Discovered in the same grave were rosette-shaped ittings, which used to be attached to a horse’s harness 36. The ittings are representative of a developed form
of the motif of the rosette with four petals arranged in the shape of a cross and four smaller ones coming
out of the corners in the pattern of the matrix from Caričin Grad (igs 8, 3; 10, 3).

CONCLUSIONS
Caričin Grad was an important ecclesiastical centre with an archbishop’s see from the foundation of the city
to its very end. The military also played an important part in the city, as attested by the complex of buildings identiied as the Principia. The presence of the military in the city is also demonstrated by numerous
inds of fragments of oficers’ helmets of the Baldenheim type and numerous parts of military equipment.
Besides the clergy and the military, the city also attracted craftsmen, which is attested by numerous inds
of tools. Farming and animal husbandry formed the basis of the economy. The discovery of the remains of
metal workshops is indicative of the importance of this branch of the economy. It should be stressed that
metalworking was the most important of the crafts 37.
Metal objects produced in the workshops of Caričin Grad were predominantly produced for the needs of
soldiers, as Bernard Bavant points out 38. They included parts of belt sets, probably parts of horse harnesses,
and ibulae, used by the population at large. It is also necessary to mention the probable production of
pendant crosses. The workshops have been precisely dated on the basis of numerous numismatic inds. The
irst of them, i. e. the one producing ibulae, has been dated to the time between the reigns of emperors
Justin II and Tiberius, or even, possibly, Phocas, and the other two to the reign of Maurice.
The items produced in the Caričin Grad workshops certainly belong to the Byzantine heritage adopted by
the Lombards, Avars, Merovingians and others, who created objects that suited their own tastes 39.
The discoveries of workshops at Caričin Grad are indicative of well-developed craftsmanship in early Byzantine cities. Likewise, the matrix for the production of ittings from Viminacium (okr. Braničevo / SRB) and
the lead model ibula with bent stem from Singidunum are indicative of such production in other centres of
Northern Illyricum, particularly those along the Danube border 40. Well-developed craftsmanship production
in other parts of the Empire is attested by the inds of matrices, moulds, models and tools. The existence of
workshops in the 6th and early 7th centuries has been attested in Palestine (Caesarea Maritima, modern Kesariya, dist. Haifa / IL) 41, Egypt 42, Asia Minor 43, Crimea 44, Africa 45, Rome 46, Greece 47 and Thrace 48. A large

number of them have also been registered in the Barbaricum, particularly from the 7th century onwards.
The most outstanding among the many items produced by workshops and goldsmiths in the areas under
Avar domination are matrices from Adony (Kom. Fejér / H), Felnac (jud. Arad / RO), Gátér-Vasútállomás (Kom.
Bács-Kiskun / H), grave 11, and Kunszentmárton-Habranyi-telep, grave 1 49. Smaller workshops are known to
have existed in the Wallachian Plain and the Carpathians 50.
The discovery of workshops at Caričin Grad has brought to the fore the issue of the existence of workshops
in large urban centres, particularly those situated in the central Balkan provinces, far from the main roads.
The discovery of these workshops and other items at Caričin Grad are indicative of well-developed craftsmanship production in the 6th century and of trade relations with remote regions. These relations were
certainly reinforced by itinerant craftsmen, who worked in numerous workshops and centres.

SUMMARY
Metal Workshops of Caričin Grad (Justiniana Prima)
The author publishes the remains of workshops discovered in the course of investigation of the settlement in the southwestern part of the Lower City. Metal objects produced in the workshops of Caričin Grad were predominantly produced
for the needs of soldiers. They included parts of belt sets, probably parts of horse harnesses, and ibulae, used by the
population at large. It is also necessary to mention the probable production of pendant crosses. The workshops have
been precisely dated on the basis of numerous numismatic inds. The items produced in the Caričin Grad workshops
certainly belong to the Byzantine heritage adopted by the Lombards, Avars, Merovingians and others, who created
objects that suited their own tastes. The discovery of these workshops and other items at Caričin Grad are indicative of
well-developed craftsmanship production in the 6th century and of trade relations with remote regions.
